Meet Carol Argyris, A Scottish Author and Poet

What are you working on? I’ve written an eighty thousand word children’s novel pitched for nine to twelve-year olds about a furry four-armed alien called Yub who, a teenager on his own planet, has a special ability that allows him to travel through space. His planet is dying and all its inhabitants live underground in biospheres built after the Cataclysms (a war) that caused the destruction of the protective atmospheric shield around the planet. Looking for a planet like his own was before the violent changes. Yub arrives in the North of Scotland and contacts a teenage boy, Josh, who…

My Heart’s Longing …

My heart’s longing is for a peaceful world and that warring factions everywhere somehow wake up to the senselessness of continuous destruction, bloodshed, and killing. I yearn for a bliss-ninny’s contentment in love. To find the eternal satisfaction popular media romanticizes. To be soaked in happiness and appreciation for all that I have, instead of focusing on innocuous things that matter little. My heart’s longing is for the ability to one-day continue my education and complete as many degrees as I want. This is not just because I must be a ‘woman of letters’, but to satisfy myself at…

OhDoYa, How ’bout It?

OhDoYa, a green bull shark, en route from Cairns to Forres, crossed my kayaking path to Scotland yesterday. We chatted once we got past all that sly dawg “How-’bout-it?” nonsense. He bragged of how he almost fished his way into yacht ownership last week. That is, until its ravenous Cap’n gulped OhDo’s sauteed-garlic-King-Crab-and-rib-eye bait, ripped free of the trap line, and sped away. Ah! The stuff I learn and characters I meet while travelling in my wilderness! It’s worth every strained back and neck muscle, slivered butt cheek, paddling blister, tear-stained other cheeks, and cold, wet hand–the latter of…

Checking In From Another Track …

Dear Scotland Co-Retreaters, It’s so nice to hear how people are doing since our writing retreat in Forres, Scotland. I wasn’t going to update anyone, thinking, ‘Everybody knows enough about my messes already.’ I’m not good at familiarity with people. Again, let’s scratch that. So damned sexy! Being back in Canada has been like hitting a stone wall–without the buffer of two drams of whisky and a beer chaser. I’ve fallen and flailed, boob over shoelace, toe over head, yelling ‘WTF’. Unfortunately, as I repeated myself, my request appears in a thought bubble about four inches above my head; there is no…

Prepping for Scotland

Dear Owner of Victorian Mansion, Hello, as it were. Is your establishment the one that makes Downton Abbey look like a cheap doll’s house? I sincerely hope so or one might feel compelled to change plans. Did you catch that? I’m using the pronoun ‘one’ like Queen Elizabeth.  I thought it brilliant and classy of me. Thanks so much for the info on taxis, buses and trains. You are awesome. A quick question. Would it be safe to walk from the Forres bus stop to your address? I’m travelling on a strict budget and, as I’ll be running on weird…
